Did you know?
- Diabetes is responsible for more deaths each year in the United States than breast cancer and AIDS combined, yet only 42 percent of Americans know that diabetes is so deadly.
- Type 2 diabetes currently accounts for up to 50% of all new cases of diabetes in children, in contrast with fewer than 4 percent before the 1990s. The main causes of type 2 diabetes are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.
- ONE in 10 Americans has diabetes, and if present trends continue, one in three will suffer from the disease by the year 2050, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Already this chronic and often debilitating illness costs the country’s health care system a staggering $174 billion a year.
- A person with type 2 diabetes complications is about three times higher than that of an healthy person. These complications, which can include heart disease, stroke, eye damage, chronic kidney disease and foot problems that can lead to amputations, cost a person with type 2 diabetes almost $10,000 each year. People with diabetes complications pay nearly $1,600 out of their own pockets for costs that are not reimbursed by insurance, such as co-payments and deductibles.
- The CDC reports that unless we change the trend of childhood obesity this generation will be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
STOMPING OUT TYPE 2 DIABETES is a community awareness event created to increase education about the risks associated with childhood obesity and encourage families to embrace healthy lifestyles. The Foundation for Leon County Schools (FLCS) and Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) have once again teamed up with a multitude of community partners that fully understand the financial, emotional, and medical costs associated with of type 2 diabetes.
According to Leon County Schools, nearly 1/3 of our student population is at risk for developing type II diabetes, and the same is true for our adult population.
By bringing wellness programs and resources that are not funded by tax dollars to our public schools, we can help 32,727 students and their families understand the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices.
Question: What’s in it for you?
Answer: A healthier public school district = a more productive and able workforce to sustain our economic vitality.
